Global oil and gas reserves have been naturally declining and the chance of finding hydrocarbons from new fields becomes increasingly challenging. The IEA (International Energy Agency) has had a consistent focus on EOR (Enhance Oil Recovery) for the last 40 years.
The Technology Collaboration Programme on EOR has been an efficient forum for knowledge sharing and inspiration. It has led to concrete collaboration across the globe and remains an important network for public organizations, national oil companies, and private enterprises.
EOR techniques allow to produce hydrocarbons already discovered thus providing the opportunity to increase production from existing reservoirs. This way novel EOR represents an option to increase the recovery factor. Furthermore, the current scenario of oil and gas prices has set up a suitable environment for research and innovation, in this context EOR seems to be a good option to slow down this global tendency of production decline and create additional value.
